Congratulations Dr. Mogetta

Congratulations to Prof. Mogetta, who has been awarded a $40,000 developmental seed grant by the MU Material Science & Engineering Institute (MSEI) to support an interdisciplinary investigation of the mechanical properties and durability of ancient Roman concrete technology. In collaboration with Drs. Sarah Orton (Civil and Environmental Engineering), Brandi MacDonald (Chemistry & MURR) and Monday Okoronkwo (Missouri S&T, Chemical and Biochemical Engineering), and with the assistance of PhD students Caitlyn Pallas (Ancient Mediterranean Studies) and Huda Alqader (Engineering), the team will carry out an experimental archaeology project on campus to manufacture a comparative collection of mortar types following the recipes transmitted by ancient Roman authors. This will provide control samples for an already planned program of geochemical analyses of ancient specimens from Mogetta’s excavation in Pompeii (to be conducted by Pallas at the Archaeometry Lab). The infrastructure established through the MSEI grant will support a second phase of fieldwork and mortar testing, which will lay the groundwork for follow-up grant applications to both address the historical development of the medium and explore possible applications to the modern industry.
