Bio

I joined MU’s faculty in 2023 after completing a PhD in American Religious History at Florida State.  in 2017 after completing a B.S. in astrophysics at the University of Minnesota (2014), and an M.A. in religion at Claremont School of Theology (2017).

My scholarship centers the entanglements of religion and race in the United States, with particular focus on the ways in which Americans utilize religious identity as a way to contest hegemonic categories of race. My ongoing research project traces the interplay of religion and revolution in Black America arguing that, far from being secular, Black radical movements dynamically contributed to the American religious landscape. Moving from the UNIA’s use of religious ritual to foster a mass Black nationalist movement to the Black Panthers’ collaboration with local churches to conduct their Free Breakfast for Schoolchildren program I seek to demonstrate how religion contributed ideas, offered organizational support, and provided sanctuary for Black revolutionaries.
